Origin of the name Grandevent

The village is mentioned in the 16th century in the form «Grandevens». It is also known as «Vers-chez-Giroud», after a local burgher family. None of the sources consulted explains the etymology of the name Grandevent.

Founding of Grandevent

None of the sources consulted gives the date, circumstances or author of the village's foundation. Grandevent was part of the métralie of Fiez and only became a separate community in 1730, when that métralie was broken up. Located about 5 km from Grandson, above the valley of the Arnon, its territory lies between those of Mauborget and Bullet; it includes the village, the hamlet of Vers-chez-Grison and the summer pasture of Grand-Brelingard, with Jura pastures planted with tall spruces. The village belongs to the parish of L'Arnon. Its economy long relied exclusively on farming. The inhabitants are nicknamed the Roosters, and the municipal coat of arms shows a red rooster on a field paly of silver and blue.

History of Grandevent

16th century. First known mention of the village, in the form «Grandevens».

1730. When the métralie of Fiez is broken up, Grandevent becomes a separate community.

1798. Under the Helvetic Republic, Grandevent belongs to the canton of Léman (1798-1803) and joins the district of Grandson.

1803. With the Act of Mediation, the village becomes part of the new canton of Vaud.

1950. The population falls to 73 inhabitants, and to 58 in 1970, its lowest level.

1970s. Improvements to the road network allow moderate population growth.

2000. More than four fifths of the working population work in Grandson or Yverdon.

2008. After the abolition of the district of Grandson, Grandevent belongs to the district of Jura-Nord vaudois.
