Origin of the name Granges-sous-Trey

The sources consulted give neither a dated first mention nor an etymology for the name Granges-sous-Trey, which therefore remains unexplained. The addition «sous-Trey» locates the hamlet in relation to the village of Trey, on whose territory it lies. Its inhabitants are nicknamed the «leu-baz» or «Leubas», those who live in the lower part of the village.

Founding of Granges-sous-Trey

The sources consulted do not say when or by whom the hamlet was founded. Granges-sous-Trey belongs to the municipality of Trey, which comprises the street village of Trey and this hamlet, located on the road from Lausanne to Bern, on the right bank of the Broye. The municipal territory extends over the sunny slope of the Broye valley and covers part of the river's former marshy plain. Near the hamlet, two mills used the power of the Trey stream to produce flour. History of Granges-sous-Trey

1798. For the whole municipality of Trey: attachment to the district of Payerne, until 2006.

1839. The first known map shows the road network of Trey; it still partly marks a track through the forest from the cemetery, which may correspond to an older and more direct link to Granges-sous-Trey.

1876. On 24 August the Lausanne-Lyss railway line comes into service, after bitter political struggles between Vaud and Fribourg; the municipality of Trey provides land free of charge. A railway halt is inaugurated at Granges-sous-Trey.

1890. The Siegfried map shows the Payerne-Romont road serving Trey, parallel to the traditional route from Lausanne to Bern, on which Granges-sous-Trey lies.

2008. The municipality of Trey, and therefore Granges-sous-Trey, becomes part of the Broye-Vully district, which comes into operation on 1 January.
