Origin of the name Miéville

Name origin: not explained in the sources consulted. The name appears in several neighbouring place names: « Crétets de Miéville », « Plans de Miéville », « Envers de Miéville » and « Côtes de Miéville ».

Founding of Miéville

Miéville is one of the hamlets of the long street village of La Sagne, together with Les Cœudres, Le Crêt, La Sagne-Église and La Corbatière, in the eastern part of the valley of La Sagne and Les Ponts-de-Martel; it belongs to the municipality of La Sagne. No founder or founding date specific to the hamlet is known. For the municipality as a whole, land clearing certainly began in the 11th or 12th century, and La Sagne is first mentioned in 1332. In the mid-19th century the quarter had farms and an apartment house built in 1846.

History of Miéville

1846. The magistrate Félix-Henri Vuille-Bille, a merchant born in 1783, has an apartment house with six flats built next to his farm, today Miéville 110.

around 1855. The family of Oscar Huguenin, born in La Sagne on 18 December 1842, moves into this house in Miéville.

1860. After five teenage years at Miéville 110, Oscar Huguenin leaves for Bôle; his drawings are inspired by the views of these quarters of La Sagne.

1935. Old beams from the demolished house of Louis and Virgile Delachaux, adjoining Miéville 113, are bought to build the Cabane de l'Aire, wanted by the Union chrétienne des jeunes gens of La Sagne.

Historic sites in Miéville

Miéville 110 house. Apartment house with six flats, spacious for the time, built in 1846 by the magistrate Félix-Henri Vuille-Bille next to his farm; Oscar Huguenin lived here as a teenager until 1860.

The Miéville place names. The Crétets, the Plans, the Envers and the Côtes de Miéville surround the hamlet, on the slope of the La Sagne valley.

Remains in Miéville

The beams of Miéville 113. The house adjoining Miéville 113 has disappeared, but its old beams were reused in 1935 in the Cabane de l'Aire.
