Origin of the name Mutrux

First mentioned in 1309 in the form «Mostrue» and in 1359 in the form «Mustrueu». The name comes from Late Latin «monasteriolu», small church; it is thought to recall the probable dependence of the place on the charterhouse of La Lance, in Concise (to be cross-checked).

Founding of Mutrux

None of the sources consulted names a founder or dates the creation of the village. A section of an old Roman road, the Vy d'Etraz, crosses the municipal territory. In the Middle Ages Mutrux depended on the lordship of Grandson, then on the métralie of Provence. For worship the village belonged to the parish of Concise. Mutrux has remained a farming municipality, lying at the foot of the north-eastern slope of the Mont Aubert. The inhabitants are nicknamed the «Chats-Borgnes» (to be cross-checked).
