Origin of the name Ressudens

Name origin: the place is recorded in the 10th century as « Ramsoldingis », then in 1184 as « Ressoudens ». The etymology is not explained in the sources consulted.

Founding of Ressudens

Ressudens is not a municipality: it is a hamlet in the municipality of Grandcour, part of the Broye-Vully district since 2008. No source consulted says when, why or by whom it was founded. In the 10th century Ressudens is an estate of the Bishop of Lausanne, and a Romanesque church already stands there. The hamlet becomes the centre of a parish, recorded before 1228, covering Grandcour and hamlets; one of the old roads leading out of Grandcour runs to its parish church.

10th century. First mention, as « Ramsoldingis »; a Romanesque church is built at this time.

922. King Rudolph II seizes the episcopal estate of Ressudens, probably in that year.

997. The estate is returned to the Bishop of Lausanne.

13th century. The Gothic church of Notre-Dame is built on the remains of the Romanesque church.

Church of Notre-Dame. 13th-century Gothic church built on the remains of a 10th-century Romanesque church, formerly the parish church of Grandcour and the nearby hamlets. 16th-century bell tower raised in 1877, 18th-century Bernese porch and pulpit of 1752.

Parsonage. Built in 1742.

Remains in Ressudens

Frescoes of 1376. Paintings of the lives of Christ and Mary, commissioned by Guillaume de Grandson, whitewashed at the Reformation and uncovered again during the 1922-1923 restoration.

Burgundian graves. Discovered during the restoration of the church in 1922-1923.

Remains of the Romanesque church. The present Gothic church stands on the remains of a 10th-century Romanesque church.

Legends of Ressudens

The capture of Bishop Boson. A legend tells that the Bishop of Lausanne, Boson, was captured by the Hungarians. It arose from the seizure of the episcopal estate of Ressudens by King Rudolph II, probably in 922; the estate was returned in 997.
