Origin of the name Rossenges

First written mention: «Rossenge» in 1309; the place is sometimes called «L'Abbaye de Rossenges». The name is said to be formed from a Germanic personal name such as Rozzo or Rotzo and the Germanic suffix -ingas, meaning «among those of Rozzo's clan» (to be cross-checked).

Founding of Rossenges

The sources consulted give neither a founding date nor a founder. An early medieval necropolis at the place called Biregard shows early occupation of the site. The commune consists of the hamlets of Rossenges and L'Abbaye, on the left bank of the Bressonne, south-west of Moudon. Rossenges was part of Moudon until 1749, when it was separated to form a commune with its own statutes, approved by Sigismond de Cerjat, lord of Syens and Rossenges.

1536. Start of Bernese rule; Rossenges is part of the bailiwick of Moudon until 1798.

1749. Rossenges is separated from Moudon and forms a commune with its own statutes, approved by Sigismond de Cerjat, lord of Syens and Rossenges.

1769. The chapelry of Syens, to which the village belongs in church matters, is raised to a parish.

1798. The commune is attached to the district of Moudon, until 2006.

1891. Founding of a dairy cooperative, active until 2003.

2003. End of the dairy cooperative.

2008. The district of Broye-Vully, created by the new Vaud territorial division, begins operating on 1 January.
