Origin of the name Treytorrens

First written mention: «Troterens» in 1194. The name is said to come from a Germanic personal name such as Trudhari followed by the suffix -ingos, meaning «among the people of» that person (to be cross-checked).

Founding of Treytorrens

The sources consulted give neither a founding date nor a founder. Remains of a Roman settlement show early occupation of the site. The village is thought to have formed around the fortified house known as the «château», dating back to the 13th century and still visible. In the 12th century, the lords of Treytorrens were vassals of the Bishop of Lausanne. The municipality comprises the clustered village of Treytorrens and the hamlet of Les Molliettes.

12th century. The lords of Treytorrens are vassals of the Bishop of Lausanne.

1194. First written mention, in the form «Troterens».

13th century. Construction of the fortified house around which the village is thought to have formed. In the middle of the century, the lords of Treytorrens recognise the overlordship of Peter II of Savoy.

1433. The village has 13 hearths.

15th century. Rebuilding of the church of Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste.

1536. Start of Bernese rule; Treytorrens belongs to the bailiwick of Moudon until 1798.

1543. The seigneury is sold to Pierre Morel, of Fribourg, then passes the same year to the Molin family of Estavayer; the «château» is mentioned.

1685. The seigneury passes to the DuGué family, Huguenot refugees, who keep it until 1798.

1798. The municipality is assigned to the district of Payerne, until 2006.

1882. Construction of the school, today the municipal hall.

1907. Restoration of the church.

1941-1943. Land consolidation.

1985. Further restoration of the church.

2005. The municipality has eleven farms.

2008. The district of Broye-Vully, created by the new territorial division of Vaud, begins operating on 1 January.

Historic sites in Treytorrens

Church of Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste. Church with a bell-gable, which belonged to the parishes of Murist and Combremont-le-Grand; rebuilt in the 15th century, restored in 1907 and 1985. It is listed as a cultural property of national importance (to be cross-checked).
