Part of the municipality of Val-de-Ruz

Origin of the name Vilars

The village is recorded in 1191 as « in Vilar ». The name comes from Late Latin « villare », which meant a small rural estate or a group of farms dependent on a villa, in other words a hamlet; the same root appears in many French-speaking Swiss place names ending in -villars, -villiers or -vilard, including Boudevilliers.

Founding of Vilars

Vilars has no known founder or foundation charter. Roman remains show that the site was occupied early. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the lordship and later the mairie of Valangin and to the parish of Saint-Blaise. With Fenin and Saules it formed a community to use the Chaumont forests (1488 and 1534), dissolved in 1865. A village of farming and forestry, Vilars kept its own institutions until it was joined with Fenin and Saules in a single municipalité in 1875, followed by the full merger of 1888 that created the municipality of Fenin-Vilars-Saules.
