Chigny
Origin of the name Chigny
First mentioned in 1221 in the form «Chinie», in the cartulary of the chapter of Lausanne. According to a municipal source, names ending in -y such as Chigny go back to Gallo-Roman estates (to be cross-checked).
Founding of Chigny
No founder is known. Chigny appears in the early 13th century as a small rural village. In the Middle Ages it was part of the lordship of Vufflens, then, under Bernese rule, of the bailiwick of Morges; it formed a single community with Vufflens-le-Château.
History of Chigny
1221. First mention, in the form «Chinie», in the cartulary of the chapter of Lausanne.
1228. Chigny belongs to the parish of Joulens.
1265. Documents of 1265 and 1286 name inhabitants of the village.
1435. Chigny is listed, wholly or partly, among the places of the lordship of Vufflens.
1495. A deed of André de Colombier names families still present today, the Duruz and the Vuffray.
1536. Bernese conquest; under Bernese rule, until 1798, Chigny belongs to the bailiwick of Morges.
1544. Attached to the parish of Vufflens-le-Château.
1799. On 9 April, first meeting of the general council.
1928. Adoption of the municipal coat of arms, based on that of the de Colombier family, with three bunches of grapes for the vineyards.
1962. The municipality buys a farmhouse, converted into the town hall.
1964. A zoning plan (supplemented in 1983) allows residential districts to the south while preserving the old village.
2008. The new Vaud districts come into force; Chigny remains in the district of Morges.

Historic sites in Chigny
Old village. The historic village core was preserved when the zoning plans of 1964 and 1983 opened residential districts to the south.
Town hall. Former farmhouse bought by the municipality in 1962 and converted into the town hall.
