Founding of Les Rasses

Les Rasses is a hamlet in the municipality of Bullet, in the Jura-Nord vaudois district, at about 1'200 m above sea level, with a view stretching from Mont Blanc to the Jungfrau. No source consulted names a founder or dates the origin of the hamlet. A small farming village, it turned to tourism at the end of the 19th century, thanks to the Yverdon-Sainte-Croix railway and the Sainte-Croix-Bullet postal service. The local entrepreneur Edouard Baierlé, whose family owned a chalet on the terrace, had the Grand Hôtel built there; opened in 1898, it made Les Rasses a resort for foreign visitors and launched the tourist development of the region.

1893. Opening of the Yverdon-Sainte-Croix railway; together with the Sainte-Croix-Bullet postal coach service, it supports the growth of tourism at Les Rasses.

1898. Opening of the Grand Hôtel des Rasses, built on the initiative of the entrepreneur Edouard Baierlé.

1904. A winter garden is added in front of the Grand Hôtel.

1913. Extension of the Grand Hôtel, doubling its capacity, shortly before the First World War.

Historic sites in Les Rasses

Grand Hôtel des Rasses. Belle Époque palace hotel opened in 1898 at about 1'200 m, on the initiative of Edouard Baierlé. A winter garden was added in 1904 and a stone wing with oriel windows in 1913. The hall keeps its « style sapin » decoration and furniture from 1914; the dining room has rich painted and sculpted Art Nouveau decoration. It received the title « Historic Hotel of the Year 2019 ».

Les Rasses ski area. Together with Sainte-Croix, Les Rasses is one of the region's winter sports centres, whose development the Grand Hôtel accompanied. Cross-country skiing grew around 1960.
